Interrupted Amolation (first version), 1893
Oil on canvas
Collection of Pinacoteca de São Paulo. Transfer from Museu Paulista, 1947
This work, along with the first version of Caipira Cutting Tobacco, can be classified as a genre painting—a common style in 19th-century academies—dedicated to capturing, on small mediums, a record of everyday life and, thus, defining social types. The first two versions of the Caipiras were acquired in 1893 by private collector Sampaio Vianna, later by the Museu Paulista, and ultimately transferred to Pinacoteca in 1947.
